Homework Tips
Homework is assigned to
help your student solidify and practice the learning that goes on inside our
classroom daily. The help prevent homework from being a battle each night here
are some tips to encourage your fourth grader to take ownership and responsibility
for their education.
1.
Remove all distractions!
Trying to work with the TV on or in the same room where siblings are playing
will not be a productive learning environment for your student. Help them find
a quiet place where they can focus.
2.
Establish a routine! Have
a specific time each day when your student knows they need to sit down and work
on their homework. That could be right after school, after dinner, or after
sports. Which ever you and your student decide, make sure you help hold them
accountable to that routine.
3.
Check and sign your
students’ planner each night! This will show assignments for each day, but also
it will show upcoming tests and monthly projects.
4.
Time management! This is a
skill that your student needs help developing. When we have our monthly reading
projects or science fair for example, it would be a great idea to sit down with
your student and talk with them about a timeline for when they plan on
completing each part of the extended assignments. Check in with them on those
decided dates to help guide them through the process- it will avoid many late
night tears!
5.
Guide them! If your
student is having trouble with a particular problem or concept, first remind
them to use their resources like their Student Reference Book for Everyday Math
or their textbook. If and only if they attempt that first, then by all means,
help to guide them in the right direction. Please don’t just give them the
answer- it’s like taking away a sail from a sailboat. They can’t function
unless they know the “HOW”
6.
Get organized for
tomorrow! Remind your child to pack their backpack before going to bed or right
after you have checked their homework and signed their planner. This is their
responsibility not yours! Help them own their education J
